You must learn how to clear your ears before starting with your hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It is important to go slow, as there is no reason to feel ear pain.
Here, we walk you through four ways to clear your ears. It can take time to get used to. It does get easier over time, though.
- The Valsalva Maneuver
This is where the patient pinches their nose, closes their mouth, and gently blows out their nose.
- Bottled Water
Bring a bottle of water inside hyperbaric chamber. This can not only clear your ears, but it can also keep you a little cooler. The hyperbaric chamber does get 5-10 degrees warmer inside when treating.
- Yawning or Opening Your Mouth Wide
Take a big yawn or open your mouth as wide as you can and then swallow.
- Chewing Gum
Chewing gum while inside the hyperbaric chamber can also help clear your ears. It is similar to being on an airplane.
If none of these options are working, be sure to adjust the balance valve as you do not want your ears to hurt. Once your ears have cleared, then, you can continue pressurizing or depressurizing. There is no need to rush.
Do not go inside your hyperbaric chamber when you have sinus congestion or ear pain, as you cannot clear your ears. Wait until your cold has cleared up and then return to your hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions.
